Inscribed since 2000 on the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage provided for by the UNESCO Convention of 1972, the Loire Valley is by its extent (280 km long) the most imposing French site labeled. Lying south of Paris, the region was popular with the kings of France during the middle ages and Renaissance and as a result there are a number of stunning Renaissance chateaux in the area known as the Loire Valley. The Loire Valley is popular with tourists who come to explore the grand castles and gardens. As well as its chateaux, the Loire Valley is known for its wines with Sancerre, Vouvray, Touraine and Pouilly-Fumé.
